The West Virginia Roughriders have re-signed defensive back Malique Johnson for the 2019 season, the team announced on Tuesday, December 18th, 2018.
Johnson, a former 6'2 starting linebacker for Old Dominion University, was signed in 2017, in their inaugural season, by the Richmond Roughriders professional arena football team playing at the historic Richmond Coliseum. Malique, a versatile player on defense, would go onto be an integral part of the Roughriders first championship season and particularly in the championship game, in which Johnson intercepted the Florida Tarpons quarterback, Mike Wallace, and returned the ball all the way for a touchdown in the final remaining seconds of the game to seal the victory for the first year Roughriders. Johnson would go onto continue his success with the Roughriders in 2018, helping them all the way to the another championship appearance and securing his second all-star team selection in just two years.
West Virginia Roughriders Owner/GM Gregg Fornario is very excited for Johnson's return to the team as he already knows what type of talent Malique brings, "Malique was a standout player at ODU and really impressed myself and our coaching staff at the first tryout we ever had. Malique's a captain and a playmaker who I am very excited to see on our side once again in 2019."
