West Virginia Roughriders Re-Sign Former West Virginia Mountaineers
Defensive Back Ellis Lankster for 2019 Season
The West Virginia Roughriders have re-signed defensive back Ellis Lankster for the 2019 season, the team announced on Wednesday, November 21, 2018.
Ellis Lankster, a former starting defensive back for the West Virginia Mountaineers (2008-2009) and participant in the 2009 Senior Bowl, would go on to be selected in the 2009 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills. Experiencing various stints of heavy playing time in Buffalo, Lankster would get picked up by Rex Ryan's New York Jets, where Ellis would match up with other Jets' defensive backs like Isaiah Trufant to become one of the staples in the Jets defense for the next 4 years. Following his time with the Jets, Lankster would return back to Buffalo, the team that originally signed him to play once again for head coach and Bills signal caller Rex Ryan.
Early in 2018, Ellis Lankster would sign with the Richmond Roughriders professional arena football team following their 2017 championship season at the Richmond Coliseum to help solidify the Roughriders secondary and provide stopping power in the running game. Throughout the 2018 season, Lankster would get a chance to adjust to the indoor game becoming an intrinsic element in the organization's defensive heart beat and attitude. Now with the re-signing of Lankster and the addition of fellow Mountaineer defensive back Robert Sands on the other side of the field, the former defensive pair will look to once again wreak havoc on offenses all season long.
Roughriders owner and General Manager, Gregg Fornario is pleased to have such a player as Lankster back with the team in their new home, "We are excited to have re-signed Ellis. He is a true ball hog and hard hitter and will provide the leadership we need on the defensive side of the ball come March."
